I know what you mean about human norms in fiction. Communication norms too, often. I was reading about how people love soaps like Eastenders because they could be about their own neighbours... and I thought "speak for yourself!" I don't identify with Eastenders... I would identify far more with something alien burbling away on a small pink planet somewhere.
